As you may know, HP released a new firmware update, version 2149A, for LaserJet printers recently. New printer firmware versions are released to address bugs, add features, or update apps. However, if you use an aftermarket printer toner cartridge, this may not be the case as the latest update may cause your printer not to recognize third-party toner cartridges.
This new firmware update will affect HP LaserJet printers that use HP 58A (CF258A) and HP 58X (CF258X) black toner cartridges. Read on for the step-by-step guide on how to disable the “Printer Update” function.

What will happen if my HP printer is affected by this update?
If you use one of the HP LaserJet printers listed above, non-original toner cartridges will no longer be recognized, and only genuine toner cartridges will be accepted. For the time being, we recommend that you use original HP toner cartridges.
How would I know if my printer has been updated?
To know if your HP LaserJet printer has been updated, we suggest checking your printer’s firmware version by printing out a Printer Status Report like the photo below.
If it shows that your firmware version is 2149A, this means that your firmware is up-to-date. If not, you can still turn off the “Printer Update” function.
